Chemically toughened glass is manufactured using a low-temperature ion exchange process. The so-called low-temperature system refers to the range where the exchange temperature is not higher than the glass transition temperature, which is relative to the temperature range above the transition temperature and below the softening point of the high-temperature ion exchange process. The simple principle of the low-temperature ion exchange process is to exchange ions with a smaller radius on the surface of the glass with ions with a larger radius in the solution in an alkali salt solution at about 400°C, such as lithium ions in the glass and potassium or sodium in the solution. Ion exchange, the sodium ions in the glass are exchanged with the potassium ions in the solution, and the difference in the volume of the alkali ions is used to form an intercalation stress on the surface of the glass. (The method is to immerse the silicate glass containing alkali metal ions in the molten lithium (Li+) salt to exchange the Na+ or K+ ions on the surface of the glass with Li+ ions, forming a Li+ ion exchange layer on the surface. The stress distribution of ion-exchange tempered glass is different from that of physical tempered glass. The thickness of the compressive stress of the surface layer of the former is small, and the internal tensile stress balanced with it is not large. Because the ion exchange layer is relatively thin, the chemical tempered glass method has a significant effect on strengthening thin glass, and the strengthening effect on thick glass is not obvious. It is especially suitable for strengthening 2 to 4 mm thick glass.
